These cultured Monarch opals are lab created opals that are recognized by the Gemological Institute. The project to create these special opals started almost 20 years ago. The monarch opals have nano particles of silica dioxide, exactly the same as natural opal and so mimic the light dispersement and flash that natural opals have, plus add a wonderful matrix that reminds one of high quality turquoise. The fantastic part is that it is much more durable than natural opal, so that although I always recommend caution, detergents like hand soap won't cause the same havoc that they do with natural opal, making it safe for most of us to have rings and bracelets created from it as well! It has a hardness of between 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale.
These opals take 8 months to a year to be grown or 'cultured' in a laboratory before they are ready to be cut and shaped into cabochons to be used in jewelry.
Your design has been carefully planned and sawn out, and a bezel that is custom fit to this particular stone is created. Once this is done, the sterling silver setting undergoes many separate sessions under the torch, soldering the various components, fitting, and re-fitting everything until it is perfect. Once all the cutting, fitting, and soldering has been complete, everything is sanded for a finish that will ensure looks and comfort, a patina is added, highlights are polished off, and very lastly, the beautiful opal stone is securely set to complete your special piece! Many hours of work go into creating each one of my pendants, and I always create with the purpose of giving you a beautiful, wearable work of art that of the highest quality, that you will enjoy for many years.
